MISS MICHIGAN AND MISS OGEMAW HILLS

Lawrence "Larry" Hofmann, age 87 passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 21, 2014. Larry was born July 16, 1926 to Eva and Norbert Hofmann in Detroit, Michigan. Larry had a hard-working childhood, working the family farm in Belding, Mich., with his mother and three siblings, Dick, Pat, and Mike, their Dad mostly away in Detroit working as a policeman.

At 17, he joined the Air Force and served in France until the end of the war. Upon his return, he joined the Michigan State Police and was posted to West Branch. There he met the love of his life Diane Demay, and they were married in 1950.

Larry thrived on the grinding 80 hour weeks, loving every minute. When he was first eligible for promotion he tested first in his class. He quickly moved up the promotional ladder, retiring in his early 40's as Captain of Intelligence. Larry next became Director of Public Safety in Fraser, Michigan for 15 Years. He finally really retired at 62 returning to West Branch where it had all begun for them. They enjoyed 21 idyllic years there.

After Diane passed away in 2009, Larry moved closer to his daughter Lauren and granddaughter Sarah, and her husband Mark, who were his loving caretakers in his last years. He is survived by his daughters: Carol, Lauren, and Linda; son Eric; grandchildren: Sarah, Jarred, and Austen; and great grandchildren Marcus and Hillary.

No services are scheduled at this time.

From the Ogemaw County Herald
February 23, 1950

Miss Josephine Bailey, Miss Ogemaw Hills and Miss Michigan for 1950 received her crown from (Governor) G. Mennen Williams at the third annual Coronation Ball held at the West Branch Community Building Saturday evening, February 18. She is pictured above with the Governor and Miss Diane DeMay, who also received the twin crown two years ago. (1948)
Highlighting the largest coronation ceremony ever staged in West Branch, Governor G. Mennen Williams officially crowned Miss Josephine Bailey as "Miss Ogemaw Hills of 1950" Saturday evening while more than 400 dancers applauded from the floor of the West Branch Community Building.
Prior to the ceremonies the Governor and Miss Bailey and members of her court were guests of honor at a reception given them from 5 to 7 at the West Branch Country Club, following a dinner served by the Dudley Wards.
Guests from down-state newspapers as well as winter sports enthusiasts from Northeastern Michigan were on hand to meet the governor and Miss Bailey.
Speaking before the more than 140 people assembled at the reception, the Governor expressed his pleasure in being invited to crown Queen Josephine and commented upon the beauty of Miss Bailey and the members of her court.
Seated at the Governor's table at the banquet were Mrs. Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Farrell, the governor's executive secretary, and Mr. and Mr.s James P. Dunnigan. The local mayor acted as toastmaster at the banquet.
Dr. Earl Hasty acted as master of ceremories at the Coronation activities and introduced Miss Bailey, Miss Carol Harper, (Miss Ogemaw Hills 1949), Miss Diane DeMay, (Miss Ogemaw Hills and Miss Michigan 1948), and Mayor James Dunnigan.
Miss Bailey also won the 1950 Michigan Queen title and was crowned Sunday, February 12 with that honor at the Grayling Winter Sports Carnival.
Members of the Queen's Court were: Miss Irene LaRocque of Prescott, Miss JoAnn McGregor of Rose City, Miss Barbara Parker of Lupton and the Misses Violet Heisler, Delores McCall and Thelma Whitchurch of West Branch.

Jo Bailey Neubecker muses about her days as Ogemaw Hills Queen....
Thelma Whitchurch went to Detroit with me for the Michigan State Fair Queen contest.  Wynne Steurnol and Freeman Cooper drove us down.  We went to Hudsons and I had my hair styled and a new outfit to appear at the State Fair.  Governor Williams was a guest and crowned the new queen.  I didn't win but it was a very exciting experience for a small town girl.  I wrote an article for the Centennial Book about the ski park and  when and how it developed.  The book isn't out yet.
