Maxine Ann Kelly Jackson
September 9th, 1935 - July 2nd, 2020
Age: 84 years

Maxine Ann Kelly Jackson, age 84, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2020 at MidMichigan Medical Center in West Branch. She was born on September 9, 1935 in Flint to Clare and Agnes (Chrivia) Kelly. Maxine lived in West Branch for most of her life. She attended West Branch High School and graduated in the class of 1955. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed sewing and tending to her flower garden.

Maxine is survived by her sons, Russell (Tammy) Bennett of Stafford, VA, Joseph (Susan Schnurle) Bennett of Scottsbluff, NE, Brian (Eva) Bennett of Denver, CO and Michael (Dawn) Jackson of West Branch; 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild; and brothers, Joseph Kelly of Stafford, VA and Byron (Karen) Kelly of Huffman, TX. She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, John Roger Bennett and Russell Jackson, sister, Sally Crawford and daughter-in-law, Paula Bennett.

Visitation at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch will begin on Sunday, July 5, 2020 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A Graveside Service will be on Monday, July 6, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at the Brookside Cemetery in West Branch.

Visitation for Maxine will be held with precautions due to the current pandemic, limiting the number of attendees at a given time.

Memorial Contributions can be made to the Ogemaw County Humane Society.

Charles Niles Grezeszak, age 82, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, March 22, 2020 surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on July 12, 1937 to Joseph Martin and Myrtle Mae (Munn) Grezeszak in West Branch, MI.

He owned and operated a dairy farm in Lupton, MI. He enjoyed time with his dog Teddy, gardening, feeding the birds, golf cart rides, hunting, fishing, bowling, his passion for truck driving and especially time with his family.

Charles is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Joyce Grezeszak, daughter Tamara (Vern) Weller, son Cary (Tamara) Grezeszak, son Joseph Grezeszak, daughter Jenniffer Grezeszak, grandchildren Alexandra (Brent) Wangler, Vern Weller III, Caleb Grezeszak, Emily Cline, Hannah Cline, and great grandchildren Wyatt Wangler, Cayden Wangler, Logan Wangler, Katie Wangler, sister Beverly Schneider of Rose City, brother Junior Grezeszak of Texas, brother in law Steven Kartes of Bay City, several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother in law Ervin Schneider, mother in law Hazel Kartes, father in law John Kartes and sister in law Janith Kaplaniak.

Per family request, cremation has taken place.

A memorial will be held at a later date.

Charlie Schagel

Charlie Jay Schagel, age 76 of Prescott, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013 at his home. Charlie was born on the farm on State Road in Prescott, He graduated from West Branch High School with the class of 1955. and was a proud owner and operator of the Schagel’s Dairy Farm, a 4th generation Centennial Farm. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, fixing tractors and working on the farm. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Charlie is survived by his daughters, Vicki (Mark) Rau of West Branch, Kathy (Doyle) David and Pam (Tony) McArthur both of Prescott and Rose Shiel of Escanaba, his grandchildren Christen (Travis) Ockerman, Michael (Jackie) Rau and Kelli Rau, Greg (Sharon) David, Jenny Schmitt, Deven (April) David, Janelle Brindley, Kelby Brindley, Hayden Brindley and Kenneth Shiel, and his great-grandchildren, Rayleigh Ockerman, Westyn Ockerman, Kenley Rau, Kyler Schmitt, Karter Schmitt, Kade Schmitt, Grant David, Gage David, Gavin David and Logan Denby. Also surviving is his sister Eva Mae Loomis and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Sheila Joyce Schagel, his parents, Elmer Jay and Lillian Elizabeth (Cox) Schagel, his brother Lawrence “Bud” Schagel and his brother-in-law Jack Loomis.

Deanna "Dee" Sullivan
Age 75 years, died Saturday, September 15, 2012 at her home with her family by her side. She was born April 22, 1937 to the late Clifton J. and Lois M. (Davis) Demerest in West Branch. Dee has resided in Bay County with her husband, Gale for most of her life. For 20 years, she was partner and office manager of Sullivan Real Estate. Dee was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church, and a member of St. Vincent de Paul Altar Society. In her younger years, she was employed with Michigan Bell Telephone and was one of the last keyboard operators. On October 26, 1957 she married Gale Sullivan in West Branch and he survives along with their two children: Kathleen (Andrew) Basgall of Georgetown, KY, Michael Sullivan of Tampa, FL; two grandchildren: Brian (Jennifer) Basgall, Erin Basgall (and special friend, Brennen Michael); two great-grandchildren: Jake and Silas Basgall; her sister: Linda (Guy) Fisk of Asheville, NC; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Dee was preceded in death by her brother: James (Beverly) Demerest, and her sister: Julie Kimball. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 10: 00 am in St. Vincent de Paul Church. Dee will lie in state in church Tuesday after 9:00 am. Rev. Robert J. Meissner will preside and interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Branch. Memorial contributions may be designated for Heartland Hospice. Visiting hours with the family will be Monday from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm with the Vigil Prayer Service at 7:00 pm in the W. A. Trahan Funeral Chapel. Online condolences: www.trahanfc.com

Thomas J. (Jake) Zettel
(July 18, 1936 - September 13, 2012)

Thomas J. (Jake) Zettel

Thomas Jacob (Jake) Zettel ,(class of 1956 West Branch High school) passed away on September 13, 2012 at Select Specialty Hospital in Saginaw. Jake married Connie Schliter on June 10, 1961. Jake lived all his life in West Branch except for three years in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany where he was in communications and played soccer. He was later recalled to active duty and served in the Army reserve. Jake retired from Coca Cola after 36 years, then working for BZ Patch and Pave for 9 years and Mid-Michigan Paving Company for 4 years. Jake was a member of the West Branch Volunteer Fire Dept. for 60 years. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge, the Knights of Columbus and Holy Family Catholic Church. He was an avid sports fan including NASCAR, an Ogemaw Heights Falcon supporter and rarely missed his children or grandchildrens high school or college sports events. He enjoyed playing cards, deer hunting and being with family. His morning routine was a trip to Schmitt’s Tire, Mac’s for breakfast, West Branch Diesel and Rau’s Cedar Land Dairy Farm.

Jake is survived by four children, Thomas R. (Amy) Zettel, Todd J. (Karen) Zettel, Terry A. (Carrie) Zettel, and Janey K. (Mike) Singer. He is also survived by grandchildren, Brandon (Ashley) Zettel and Courtney (Dan) McVeigh, Trevor and Robbie Zettel, Kyle, Jenna, Anthony and Easton Zettel, Max and Quinn Singer, step-grandchildren, Michelle and Madaline Munoz. Also, great-grandchildren Khloe Zettel, Braden and Cora Zettel. He is also survived by his brothers Richard Zettel of Winter Haven FL. and William Zettel of West Branch and his sisters, Joan Poling, Janet (Barry) Wilkinson and Joyce Nelander all of West Branch and a special friend, Nancy Kelley of Oklahoma.

Jake was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Connie, on January 26, 2007 and his infant daughter Kim on December 2, 1972, his mother Margaret Reetz Zettel and father Paul Gabriel Zettel. Also, his sister-in-law Eileen Zettel and brothers-in-law Stacy Poling, John Tobin, Jim Nelander and Terry Schliter.

 Burial will be in  St. Joseph Cemetery, West Branch.

Marlene Dubuis Slosser, graduated  from West Branch High School, West Branch, Michigan, with the class of 1955.
 
Living in Linwood, Michigan, Mrs. Slosser age, 74 loving wife, mother, and grandmother passed away Friday September 7, 2012 at McLaren Regional Medical Center. She was born on March 23, 1938 in Linwood, Michigan to the late Emery and Clara (Weaver) Dubuis. She married Roy (Buck) Slosser on October 27, 1956 in Saginaw, Michigan. He survives her. Marlene enjoyed flower gardens, and spending time with her nieces, but most of all spending time with her family. Surviving besides her husband of 55 years are their children; David (Linda), Sandra Torres, Ronald, and Daniel (Cheryl), eight grandchildren Amanda (Matt), Ryan (Brandi), Jennifer, Tiffany (Patrick), Robert, Jeff (Krystal), Matthew, and Sarah, and a great granddaughter Madison, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four sisters and two brothers. A Memorial Service will be held Monday September 10, 2012 at 6:30 pm from the Rivertown Funeral Chapel with Fr. Chester Pilarski presiding with inernment to follow. Friends may call on Monday from 3 pm until time of service.

Benny Leo Meir, age 59 of West Branch, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at West Branch Regional Medical Center. Benny had lived in West Branch for all of his life and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge and the Eagles of West Branch. He enjoyed working in the woods, building construction, logging, shuffleboard, darts, pool shooting and gardening.

Benny is survived by his siblings, Marjorie (Juan) Rey-Froufe of Kingsville, Ontario, Vernon Meir of Prescott, Linda (Harold) Stephens of West Branch and Leona (David) Dezsi of Southgate, his daughter, Beth (Mike Laier) Meyst of West Branch, granddaughters, Hailey Laier and Noelle Laier and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Ailene Meir, his sister Helen Reetz and his soul mate Bunny Meyst.

Sheila J. Schagel, age 70 of Prescott, passed away Wednesday December 15, 2010 at her home. Sheila was born and raised in Lansing when she married Charlie in 1959. She moved to Prescott and co-owned and operated Schagel’s Dairy Farm. She enjoyed reading, flowers and collectibles.

Sheila is survived by her husband Charlie Schagel of Prescott, daughters, Kathy (Doyle) David and Pam (Troy) Brindley both of Prescott, Rose Shiel of Escanaba and Vicki (Mark) Rau of West Branch, 10 grandchildren, Greg David, Deven David, Jenny Schmitt, Kenny Shiel, Christen Ockerman, Michael Rau, Kelli Rau, Janelle Brindley, Kelby Brindley and Hayden Brindley and 6 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her sisters, Sue Brownfield of Lansing, Sandra (Jake) Bortle of Hale and Diane Roberts of Holt. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Fern Jean of Lansing.

Visitation at the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch will begin on Friday, December 17, 2010 from 1-9 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Norman Miller will officiate with burial following at Selkirk Cemetery.

 Virgil P. Curtis, age 72, Class of 1955, of West Branch, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at Bay Regional Medical Center. He was drafted into the U.S. Navy and served 2 years. Virgil volunteered as an umpire for Surline Middle School softball for many years. He sponsored a bowling league for 20 years too. He donated to many West Branch public projects including the 3rd Street water fountain and the original dugouts at Ogemaw Heights High School. Virgil owned and developed Hillcrest Subdivision as well as built many commercial and residential buildings. He was an avid fisherman and shared ownership in a Canadian Cabin and claimed that BAD JOHN cheated on the last euchre game. Virgil was a member of the National Fishing Lure Collector Club (NFLCC) for the last 10 years and also bought and sold on Ebay.

Survivors include his wife Jeannie Curtis of West Branch, children, Elizabeth (Robert) Steinhurst, Gail (Troy) Brown and Gina (Joshua) Rosebrugh all of West Branch and Molly (Ronald) Tschirhart of Troy, 10 grandchildren and he helped raise his brother in law, Daniel “Gus” Robson of Platteville, CO. Also surviving are his sisters, Dorothy Clayton, Geraldine Oliver and Mary Lucas all of West Branch and Betty Coleman of Washington and his brother David Curtis of West Branch and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his 4 brothers, Glen, Leith, Carl and George Curtis.

 

Memorial Contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Pastor Discretionary Fund, the Ogemaw County Clergy Fund (Food Pantry/Good Samaritan) or to the Alumni Scholarship Fund (Part of the Community Foundation).
